Sex in the Midia
Sex is everywhere in the media, TV, music, magazines, and particularly on the internet. If that ’s not enough, now the sexual content is reaching cell phones and other portable devices. Wherever we go we are surrounded by explicit or implicit sexual images and remarks. The biggest negative side of such sexual revolution as pointed by many researchers it’s the exposure of teenagers to sexual content, and their early development of sexuality.
However, despite the fact that teenagers are losing an important part of their development by becoming sexual too early, we forget to ask ourselves if they are actually having more sex as the previous generations. And if this is really a fact, is this necessarily wrong? Everyone tends to react negatively when it comes to sex, no matter if it’s a serious issue concerning sexual diseases or a comment about masturbation, sex it’s always viewed as a joke or a serious crime. In fact, generally both at the same time. One good example is masturbation, always considered a taboo, no matter how many researches or specialists pointing masturbation as an important part of sexual learning and essential to the development of sexuality it’s always considered a negative thing, even by adolescents themselves, who learn that masturbation is something for losers.
Of course we should not expect a complete normal sexual behavior of a 12 years old teenager, who’s not completely developed in many aspects of his personality and entering the early stages of his sexuality, but should we consider a 19 years old boy so unqualified to have an active sexual life?
Researches show that in fact teens are trying to take safer decisions about sex, as they are engaging in practices they consider less risky as an alternative for sexual intercourse, such as oral sex. Maybe it’s really a question of adapting our current system of sexual education to fulfill the necessities of adolescents, instead of fighting the natural course of things.
